Rupture Disk
A rupture disk is a one-time overpressure protection device designed to intentionally burst when the design pressure is exceeded, releasing pressure to protect tanks, piping, and equipment.
| Operating Principle | A thin disk made of metal, graphite, or composite material ruptures instantly at the specified burst pressure, operating by material strength rather than springs or mechanical mechanisms. |
| Structural Types | Domed types (Forward Acting / Reverse Acting) Graphite disks, composite disks Used with a holder to induce rupture in a specific direction |
| Response Time & Accuracy | Near-instant opening upon overpressure (milliseconds range) Burst tolerance (±%) control; design considerations for temperature and vibration |
| Applicable Standards | ISO 4126, ASME Section VIII, API 520 / 521 Integrated with design pressure, set pressure, and piping sizing for tanks and pressure vessels |
